Making screen reading accessible to everyone

Updated: Sep 9, 2020

Remote learning has meant increased screen-time for most students. But for once, there are some good news: on-screen text can be modified to suit individual learner's needs, whether that is re-spacing or re-colouring words and paragraphs on a page to ease readability.

How it works

Immersive Reader works both with text-based documents and with image-based text, where words can be extracted and re-rendered visually.

Text editing available for accessibility:

  • Change font size, text spacing, and background colour.

  • Split up words into syllables.

  • Highlight verbs, nouns, adjectives and sub-clauses.

  • Choose between two fonts optimised to help with reading.

  • Read out text aloud, and change the speed of reading.

Free app included in Office 365 for Education (including OneNote, Word, the web version of Outlook and Office Lens for iOS); Minecraft Education edition and Flipgrid.
